Expelled by the ambering grass,
this green hopper takes his bruises
hoping to resemble a fallen leaf.
His own wings are already punched,
a sailboat’s membrane bored
by caterpillars and gluttonous slugs.
Callous – I cannot discern the crunch,
my earthquake splinter’s dried bodies
beneath my feet. Here, the hungry grief.
